Nicolas Sarkozy: French President Calls for Timed Troop Exit From Iraq
27 August 2007 -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy is calling for a clear timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq, and says Iran's nuclear program is the most serious crisis facing the international community today.

France Reports Four Ducks Found With Bird Flu
14 August 2007 -- French authorities say four ducks have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu in northeastern France.
The ducks were found dead last week in an area known as Diane Capelle in the Moselle region.
Two dead swans had already been discovered with bird flu at the end of July in the same area. The site is just 10 kilometers from where three other swans were found dead with the virus about a month earlier.
That outbreak was the first in France in more than a year. » read more »

French-Led Group to Build Chernobyl Sarcophagus
08 August 2007 -- A French-led consortium has been selected to build a new protective encasement for Ukraine's leaking nuclear reactor at the site of the world's worst nuclear accident.
Ukraine officials say the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has chosen a bid from the consortium Novarka to build the encasement for the plant's number-four reactor. Novarka includes French, German and Ukrainian firms.
A concrete sarcophagus built immediately after the accident still holds 200 tons of dangerous radioactive fuel, and experts say the protective casing is deteriorating. » read more »
UN Unanimously Approves Peacekeeping Force for Sudan's Darfur Region
New York, 31 July 2007 (By Victoria Cavaliere) -- The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved sending an expanded peacekeeping force to Sudan's Darfur region. 10 July 2007 -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy has notified European Union finance ministers that he may not be able to wipe out his country's budget deficit by the EU deadline of 2010.
Mr. Sarkozy was in Brussels Monday to speak to finance ministers from the 13 EU nations which use the euro as their currency.
The president said he may be able to balance the French budget by 2012.
