February 4, 2008 -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is requesting nearly $2.4 billion to protect and promote public health as part of the President's fiscal year (FY) 2009 budget—a 5.7 percent increase over the budget that the FDA received for the current fiscal year.

The FY 2009 request, which covers the period of Oct. 1, 2008 through Sept. 30, 2009, includes $1.77 billion in budget authority and $628 million in industry user fees.    » read more »

Grain Harvest Sets Record, But Supplies Still Tight

December 12, 2007 – The 2007 grain harvest hit a record 2.3 billion tons, yet voracious global demand has pushed cereal stocks to 30-year lows. Despite growing harvests, several factors are actually decreasing the amount of grain available per person as food, which peaked at 376 kilograms in 1986:

* Industrial livestock production requires large amounts of grain, particularly corn. Grain, in conjunction with soybeans, provides the primary source of livestock feed: in total, roughly one third (35 percent) of the world’s grain becomes feed.    » read more »

Scientists: Global Warming Could Affect World Food Supply

15 October 2007 -- Scientists are predicting there could be a global food crisis in this century if climate change continues unabated.

Buddy Hanse has been farming on land south of Washington, DC, his entire life. He is also deputy secretary of agriculture for the state of Maryland.

"The corn we are harvesting will go to feed the poultry industry on the Eastern Shore of Maryland," Hanse said.

But this year's crop of corn is falling far short of normal yields. "We have had a lot of difficulties in the weather in this crop," added Hanse. "We were very dry earlier."    » read more »
