"Private First Class Trimble served with honor, integrity and unrelenting dedication to our country and his fellow soldiers. He was a true patriot and his selflessness will never be forgotten. Maria and I join all Californians in offering our condolences to Chad's loved ones during this difficult time."
Trimble, 29, died May 28, near Gardez, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Trimble was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), United States Army, Fort Campbell, KY. » read more »

05/28/2008 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Spc. Christopher Gathercole, of Santa Rosa, CA:
“Maria and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Specialist Christopher Gathercole. He served with courage, determination and patriotism and Californians will forever remember his sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with Christopher’s family, friends and fellow soldiers during this difficult time.”
Gathercole, 21, died May 26 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from small arms fire during combat operations. Gathercole was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, United States Army, Fort Lewis, WA.

West Virginia Governor Orders State Flags To Be Lowered In Observance Of Memorial Day
May 23, 2008 -- CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Following a federal proclamation issued by President George W. Bush on May 22, West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin today issued a proclamation ordering all state flags, along with all United States flags, be displayed at half staff from dawn through noon Monday, May 26, 2008, in recognition of Memorial Day.
The governor also asked all West Virginians to display their U.S. and state flags on their homes at half staff from dawn until noon on Monday. Also in conjunction with the President’s Memorial Day Proclamation, citizens are also being asked to join in the nationwide observance for permanent peace at 11 a.m. and the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day.

Nebraska Governor Heineman Reminds Nebraskans to Fly Flags at Half-Staff on Memorial Day Morning
May 23, 2008 -- (Lincoln, Neb.) -- Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman today reminded Nebraskans that U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff until noon on Monday, May 26 per presidential order to honor the selfless service of America’s servicemen and women.
Gov. Heineman said, “On behalf of all Nebraskans, I salute the heroes who have served this country with honor. I ask that we each take a moment to pause during gatherings with friends and family this Memorial Day to remember the courage and bravery of those who have sacrificed all for our nation and our freedom.”
Yesterday, President George W. Bush signed a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide during the first half of this year’s Memorial Day observance.

According to the Department of Defense, Pvt. Branden P. Haunert, 21, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died in Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Jaenichen, 20, died May 9 of a non-combat related injury in Iskandariyah, Iraq. Jaenichen was assigned to the Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, United States Army, Fort Stewart, GA.
In honor of Spc. Jaenichen, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
