Groups Demand EPA Action on Gender-Bending Chemicals

June 5 , 2007 -- Washington, DC: Laundry workers, commercial fishermen and environmental and public health groups petitioned the EPA today urging the agency to provide health and safety protections from the endocrine-disrupting chemicals, nonyplphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). The groups are calling for further health and safety studies, labeling of products containing the chemicals, and banning their use in industrial and consumer detergents, since safer alternatives are available. International Commission to Decide on Ban on Commercial Whaling

28 May 2007 -- The International Whaling Commission is meeting in the northern U.S. state of Alaska to decide whether to drop a moratorium on commercial whale hunting.

The ban was enacted in 1986 to help prevent several species of great whales from becoming extinct.

Representatives from 75 member countries will debate the issue during their annual meeting, which ends Thursday.

Pro-whaling nations such as Japan, Norway and Iceland argue that the ban can be lifted since whale populations have recovered. Approval from 56 member nations would be needed to overturn the ban.    » read more »

PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney Pat Meehan recently announced two guilty pleas in connection with an international ring that smuggled dead body parts of endangered species into the United States.1 The endangered species was the marine mammal Physeter macrocephalus , commonly known as the Sperm whale. Michigan DNR Warms Of Dangers of Asian Carp

May 3, 2007 -- A recent presentation by a conservation officer of the Department Natural Resources to the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in the Detroit area highlighted the potential adverse effects of introducing Asian carps - black, bighead, grass and silver - to Michigan waters.

DNR Commercial Fish Specialist Steven Huff gave the presentation in April to 85 members of the organization at a recent meeting in Detroit. Huff emphasized the impact the fish could have on the state's commercial and sport fisheries.    » read more »

April 19, 2007 -- SPRINGFIELD – In light of a recent letter received by Lake County Vietnam veteran Ray G. Canaday, Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) Director L. Tammy Duckworth today announced that the annual free hunting and fishing licenses for disabled veterans issued by IDVA will now be a one-time, permanent issue.
