EPA Fines Authority for the Port of the Americas for Contractor Dredging Violations

03/10/2008, San Juan, P.R. -- Demonstrating its strong commitment to protect our oceans and marine life, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced that it has reached a settlement with the Authority for the Port of the Americas requiring it to pay a penalty of $308,000 for improper disposal of dredged material. On a number of occasions in the spring and summer of 2006, Weeks Marine, Inc., a Port of the Americas contractor, dumped material dredged to create the port in areas other than those designated for ocean disposal by EPA in its federal permit.    » read more »

U.S. EPA Reaches Milestone at One of the Most Contaminated Sites in the U.S., Cleaning Up More Than 11 Tons of Toxins

February 5, 2008, SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Shell Oil Company have removed more than 23,000 pounds of hazardous toxins from the Del Amo Superfund Site Waste Pits near Torrance, Calif.

With EPA oversight, responsible parties Shell Oil Company and the U.S. General Services Administration built a soil vapor extraction system at the Del Amo Waste Pits and have been successfully operating it for one year. The system stops further contamination of area groundwater, a potential drinking water resource.    » read more »

Funds to Help Protect 35 Farms in 22 Counties

December 20, 2007 -- New York Governor Eliot Spitzer today announced approximately $35 million in funding through the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Program to protect nearly 13,300 acres of active farmland across New York State. The funding is the largest dollar amount ever dedicated for farmland preservation, and will go to protect the largest single amount of acreage in the program’s 11-year history.
