January 18, 2008 -- SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today asked President Bush to declare Iroquois and Livingston counties major disaster areas as a result of flooding that devastated areas of those counties last week, damaging hundreds of homes and businesses. A federal disaster declaration would enable people and businesses affected by the floods to apply for grants and loans to help with flood losses.    » read more »

Reid, Ensign, Heller Send Bush Letter Requesting Swift Declaration Of Disaster Area in Fernley

January 7, 2008 -- Reno, NV – Responding to the levee breach that flooded Fernley, U.S. Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign, and Representative Dean Heller of Nevada sent the following letter to President Bush urging swift action to declare the flood a major disaster area.

The President must declare the area a federal emergency before it can become eligible for public assistance to cover the repairs or replacement of infrastructure.

Federal funding is available to State and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storms in the counties of Cleveland, Lincoln, Mayes, Oklahoma, Pottawatomie, Tulsa, and Wagoner.    » read more »

December 15, 2007 -- Oklahoma City -- Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry today asked President George Bush for a major disaster declaration for an initial seven Oklahoma counties devastated by the recent ice storm. As more damage assessments are completed, requests will be made for additional counties to be declared.

10 December 2007 -- South Korean officials say they will declare a long stretch of the country's western coastline a disaster area. The move makes residents and businesses eligible for compensation as an enormous oil spill devastates wildlife and fishing resources along the coast. Even with thousands of workers mobilized, the cleanup is expected to take months.
