Sudan, China: Darfur Crisis Sparks Louder Calls For 2008 Olympics Boycott
19 June 2007 -- As the humanitarian crisis in Darfur continues, calls in the United States and Europe for an international boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of China’s support of Sudan are intensifying.
Human rights activists say the Sudanese government is using a militia, the janjaweed, to “exterminate” the black people of Darfur. They claim that 400, 000 people have lost their lives and more than two million have fled to refugee camps as a result of the violence. » read more »
Sudan: Sudan Confirms Deployment of UN Peacekeeping Force
17 June 2007 -- A U.N. Security Council delegation visiting Sudan says the Khartoum government has agreed to the deployment of a United Nations and African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur.
South African ambassador Dumisani Kumalo made the announcement Sunday following hours of talks with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum.
He says Mr. Bashir has agreed to allow the speedy deployment of around 20,000 U.N. and African Union peacekeepers. » read more »

Somalia: Separate Blasts in Somali Capital Kill at Least 7
15 June 2007 -- At least seven people, including two children, have been killed in separate explosions in Mogadishu, the latest attacks in fighting between Islamic militants and government troops in Somalia.
The two children were killed in a blast Friday in the south of the Somali capital, near a United Nations compound.
At least five other people were killed in separate explosions today throughout the city.
Hours earlier, security officials displayed a large cache of weapons seized in house-to-house searches throughout Mogadishu. » read more »
Congress Using Olympics to Pressure China on Sudan
13 June 2007 -- The U.S. House of Representatives already is on record urging China to put pressure on Sudan to end bloodshed in the Darfur region. Leaders on a key foreign affairs subcommittee said they hope to use the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as leverage.
