01 October 2007 -- The Philadelphia Phillies have qualified for Major League Baseball playoffs for the first time since 1993, winning their final game of the regular season over the visiting Washington Nationals, 6-1.
The New York Mets could have tied Philadelphia for the National League East Division and forced a one-game playoff, but they lost at home to the Florida Marlins, 8-1. 23 September 2007 -- The Boston Red Sox became the first major league baseball team to clinch a playoff spot, scoring three runs in the ninth inning Saturday to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 8-6.
Boston Red Sox trailed 6-5 when Jason Varitek led off the ninth with a home run, followed an out later by Julio Lugo's two-run homer.
