Brazil Recommended by FIFA to Host 2014 World Cup

25 October 2007 -- The International Football Federation (FIFA) has recommended Brazil to host the World Cup in 2014, after inspectors toured the South American nation.

The inspection report said Brazil is an "appropriate choice" to host the 2014 World Cup. The inspectors said Brazil has demonstrated itself to be more than capable of hosting what they called "an exceptional World Cup."

The report was sent to the FIFA executive committee, which will announce its decision on Tuesday.    » read more »

Germany Wins 2nd Straight FIFA Women's World Cup

30 September 2007, Shanghai (By John Stevenson) -- Germany has won the Women's World Cup football tournament in China. VOA's Jim Stevenson reports from Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai, where the Germans scored a 2-0 victory over Brazil to become the first team to claim consecutive titles in a major women's football competition.

China is again hosting the premier event in women's football after holding the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. An outbreak of SARS prevented China from hosting the last World Cup in 2003. The event was held instead in the United States. 5-Sep-2007 -- During the last glaciation, which ended about 10 000 years Before Present (BP), the Brazilian Atlantic forest extended over all the eastern side of the country, covering more than 1 200 000 km², 15% of Brazil’s territory. Now only 95 000 km² of this natural habitat survives, just 8% of its initial extent. It is still a large biodiversity reservoir in Brazil, second only to the Amazonian forest. Brazil to Revive Nuclear Program

10 July 2007 -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced plans to revive the country's long-stalled nuclear program.

President da Silva told reporters in Sao Paulo state Tuesday that funds will be allocated for completion of another nuclear power plant and construction of a nuclear-powered submarine.

Mr. da Silva also said Brazil could become one of the few countries in the world to control the entire uranium enrichment cycle.    » read more »
