Executive Order - Establishment of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force

November 17, 2009 -- By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to strengthen the efforts of the Department of Justice, in conjunction with Federal, State, tribal, territorial, and local agencies, to investigate and prosecute significant financial crimes and other violations relating to the current financial crisis and economic recovery efforts, recover the proceeds of such crimes and violations, and ensure just and effective punishment of those who perpetrate financial crimes and violations, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1. Establishment. There is hereby established an interagency Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force (Task Force)led by the Department of Justice.    » read more »

DOE: $40 Million for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Projects in Florida and Maine

November 17, 2009 -- Washington, DC – Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today that DOE is awarding nearly $40 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Florida and Maine to support clean energy projects. U.S., China to Pursue Nuclear Weapons Treaties

Countries Discuss Outer Space Cooperation

BEIJING -- November 17, 2009 -- China and the United States today released a joint statement at the conclusion of formal talks between President Obama and President Hu Jintao that included agreements on nuclear weapons issues and cooperation in space.

In the statement, the United States and China "reaffirmed their commitment made on 27 June 1998 not to target at each other the strategic nuclear weapons under their respective control." This reverses a decision by the Bush administration, which was first announced in the 2002 Nuclear Posture Review, to target China with U.S. nuclear weapons.    » read more »

In Letter to Obama, Markey encourages President to Dramatically Alter our Nuclear Weapons Mission

Markey (D-Mass.), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment and the founder of the House Bipartisan Task Force on Nonproliferation, today wrote to President Obama encouraging him to dramatically rethink the way nuclear weapons are used in our country.

Rep. Capuano Calls on President Obama to Create Jobs with TARP Funds

Sends Letter to the President Urging Action

November 16, 2009 -- Representative Mike Capuano today called on President Barack Obama to use the remaining funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) to create jobs.

In a letter to the President, Rep. Capuano noted that the unemployment rate is at a "26 year high" and asked the President to "direct the remaining TARP funds towards projects that put more Americans back to work." With $210 billion in TARP funds currently unspent, and another $50 billion expected to be repaid in the next year, Rep. Capuano urged that these funds should be used for job creation.

"TARP was established to address the financial crisis," state Rep. Capuano in his letter. "I do not believe we can reasonably say that the job of TARP is complete."    » read more »
