Olympic Torch Arrives in Argentina

11 April 2008 -- The Olympic torch has arrived in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, after a flight from San Francisco.

Argentine police whisked the flame away to a secret location on Thursday. The torch will reappear on Friday morning, when football legend Diego Maradona carries it at the opening of the relay through Buenos Aires.

Argentina: World Bank Approves US$60 Million For Sustainable Management Of Natural Resources

Argentina Restricts US Ambassador's Contacts

19 December 2007 -- The Argentine government says it will restrict its contacts with the U.S. ambassador in response to U.S. allegations that Venezuela attempted to finance the campaign of Argentina's new president.

Argentine officials say U.S. Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne will now only be able to communicate with their government through the Foreign Ministry. They also say Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana met with Ambassador Wayne Tuesday to register Argentina's complaint about the accusation about President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's campaign.    » read more »

Duran Duran Will Launch Their New Album 'Red Carpet Massacre' Nov. 13

29 October 2007, Washington (By Mary Morningstar) -- Duran Duran will launch the November 13 release of their new album Red Carpet Massacre with a 9-night engagement at the Barrymore Theater on Broadway.

The Broadway shows begin on November 1 and wrap up on November 12.

Duran Duran's itinerary also includes a show at the "World Football Idol" competition in Argentina on November 24. "World Football Idol" is described as "the first global event to find the next big football (soccer) star."

FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer Begins in Shanghai, China

09 September 2007, Shanghai (By Jim Stevenson) -- The fifth FIFA Women's World Cup football tournament kicks off Monday in Shanghai, China. VOA's Jim Stevenson is at the event and has this preview.

China is again hosting the premier event in women's football after holding the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. An outbreak of SARS prevented China from hosting the last World Cup in 2003. The event was held instead in the United States. The tournament now returns to the birthplace of the game, and it is also helping to boost preparations for the Beijing Olympics in less than one year.    » read more »

Presidents of Venezuela, Bolivia, and Argentina Meet on Energy Issues

10 August 2007 -- The presidents of Venezuela, Bolivia, and Argentina met Friday in the southern Bolivian town of Tarija.

Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Bolivia's Evo Morales, and Argentina's Nestor Kirchner signed agreements to share the costs of energy production. They agreed to fund the construction of a gas-separation plant near Bolivia's border with Argentina.

Mr. Chavez has been campaigning for more integration of the energy industry in South America. Bolivia is his last stop on a four-nation tour meant to promote South American energy production.    » read more »
