United States Defeats Sweden in Davis Cup Tennis

23 September 2007 -- The United States will host Russia in the Davis Cup tennis World Group final in November, after the U.S. defeated Sweden 4-1 in Goteburg and Russia held off Germany 3-2 in Moscow.

Andy Roddick served 16 aces Sunday to beat host-Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 to clinch a semifinal victory. James Blake beat Simon Aspelin of Sweden, 6-1, 6-3, in a dead-rubber match to make the final in the best-of-five series, 4-1. 02 September 2007 (VOA Sports) -- Defending U.S. Open tennis champion and second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia has become the first big upset of this year's tournament in New York.

Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska shocked Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

Another seeded Russian also fell in third-round play Saturday when unseeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary downed number seven Nadia Petrova (6-4, 6-4).

Other seeded women ousted Saturday include two Swiss players: number 11 Patty Schnyder and number 16 Martina Hingis.    » read more »

Tennis: American Roddick Wins Third Legg Mason Tennis Title

06 August 2007 -- Top-seeded Andy Roddick has won his third Legg Mason Classic tennis title in Washington. But as VOA's Jim Stevenson reports, Roddick and the rest of the tennis world may have witnessed the emergence of a new American tennis star.

Roddick is no stranger to playing in tournament finals. With his win Sunday at the Legg Mason Classic, Roddick has now prevailed 23 times to win events, including three at the annual Washington tournament.
