June 18, 2009 -- Colorado Governor Bill Ritter announced seven Colorado organizations have been awarded almost $1.4 million in AmeriCorps*State grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. These awards are funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Bill signed in April by President Barack Obama.

The funding means communities around Colorado will have 612 AmeriCorps members working on projects to assist in areas impacted by the economic downturn. The funds will be used to expand existing community activities such as tutoring, building affordable housing, environmental restoration, after school programs, teaching computer skills, responding to disasters, improving health services and others.    » read more »

June 17, 2009 -- MADISON - Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle today announced that the Wisconsin National and Community Service Board (Serve Wisconsin AmeriCorps) received $1,955,505 in American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding to expand the capacity of 17 of its existing AmeriCorps programs in Wisconsin. In addition, the ARRA will provide $632,961 in education awards for AmeriCorps Members to attend college and place 199 individuals in AmeriCorps positions across Wisconsin.    » read more »

American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Money Will Fund 10 Programs

June 9, 2009 -- HARRISBURG – More than 500 additional AmeriCorps positions in 10 community-based programs will be created over the next year by $2.8 million in grants Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell announced today from the federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act.

“This is a positive, strategic investment to put people to work at the grass roots level of citizen service,” said Governor Rendell. “This money will reach across the state, into rural communities and cities, and act as a catalyst for academic achievement programs, job skills training, home weatherization projects and as much-needed support for nonprofit and human services agencies.”    » read more »

Thirteen Community Groups Will Receive Funding to Hire 1,338 AmeriCorps Workers to Improve Programs for Local Youth

June 2, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide a total of $7,719,922 to 13 community centers in New York City. The funding will hire 1,338 AmeriCorps workers to help New York City students improve their education.

"This funding will bring real results to students in New York City schools," Schumer said. “Additional classroom staffing will provide each student the personal attention they need to succeed in school and in the future. June 2, 2009 -- DOVER - Delaware Governor Jack Markell announced Tuesday that the Division of Parks and Recreation will receive nearly $370,000 in AmeriCorps grant funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant will support a total of 65 AmeriCorps members who will meet vital needs across the state in environmental and preservation initiatives.

May 29, 2009 -- HARKIN Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that a total of $1,334,016 has been awarded to eight AmeriCorps programs across Iowa. This competitive funding comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Harkin has been a long time supporter of AmeriCorps and is the Chairman of the panel that funds these initiatives.

May 29, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D?SD) announced today that the Teaching the Young People AmeriCorps program at the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge will receive a $234,160 federal grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The funding allows 22 AmeriCorps members to receive up to $4,725 to pay for college or qualified student loans.

“These funds will allow AmeriCorps volunteers to continue meeting the needs of the Pine Ridge community,” Johnson said. “AmeriCorps volunteers are a great example of those who make our communities better. Chris Gregoire today announced $3.4 million that is now available for Washington state under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to support national service positions. Markell, Denn announce Recovery Act award of $153,895 for 40 new AmeriCorps part-time positions at Delaware State Parks

May 18, 2009 -- WILMINGTON - Delaware Governor Jack Markell and Lt. Governor Matt Denn announced that Delaware has received $153,895 through Federal Recovery Act funding for 40 new AmeriCorps members to work at Delaware State Parks. 5/6/2009 -- North Carolina Governor Perdue today announced that the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service received $891,387 in American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding to expand the capacity of four of its existing AmeriCorps programs.

Kennedy Serve America Act will triple the size of AmeriCorps (from 75,000 to 250,000 members) and focus that service on today’s challenges, including clean energy, education, health care, veterans care, and economic opportunity. The bill will also provide new service opportunities for millions of Americans at all stages of their lives. The legislation will develop a fund to seed and grow successful ideas in the nonprofit sector and build the capacity of the nonprofit sector to use volunteers more effectively.
