California Governor Schwarzenegger Announces State-of-the-Art Traffic Control System in Los Angeles

Seven Found Dead in Plane Crash in Washington State

09 October 2007 -- The bodies of seven people have been recovered from the wreckage of an airplane that crashed late Sunday in the northwestern U.S. state of Washington.

Emergency officials say three others who were aboard the aircraft are also believed to be dead.

A spokeswoman with Yakima County Emergency Management, Tina Wilson, says the missing aircraft was found Monday evening by rescue workers following the smell of fuel.

Nine skydivers and a pilot were on the plane when it took off Sunday evening from Star, Idaho, where the skydivers had just completed an event.    » read more »

Flight Data Recorders Recovered from Thai Plane Wreckage

17 September 2007 -- Thai investigators have found both flight data recorders from a passenger plane that crash-landed on the resort island of Phuket, killing at least 89 of the 130 passengers and crew on board.

The devices will be sent to the United States for analysis, a process expected to take at least a week. Authorities hope the information will help explain why the plane crashed on the airport runway while landing in heavy rain and strong winds Sunday.    » read more »

Thai Plane Crash Kills 88, Injures 42

16 September 2007 -- Officials in southern Thailand say they fear most of the 130 people aboard a passenger jet died when the airplane crashed in the resort of Phuket. Thai officials say a plane crash on the southern resort island of Phuket has killed 88 people and injured 42.

The plane, a U.S.-made MD-82 aircraft operated by the budget carrier One Two Go Airlines, was landing at Phuket airport in a rainstorm when officials say it slid off the runway, broke apart, and burst into flames.    » read more »

27 August 2007 -- U.S. aviation authorities have ordered emergency inspections of newer model Boeing 737 airliners in response to last week's explosion and fire that destroyed a China Airlines plane in Japan.

UN Warns World at Greater Risk from Infectious Diseases

23 August 2007 -- The World Health Organization says infectious diseases are spreading around the world at a faster rate than ever before, making them more difficult to treat.

In its annual World Health Report, issued Thursday, the United Nations agency says one or more new diseases have been identified every year since the 1970s, a rate it says is "unprecedented."

The agency also says efforts to control such well-known diseases as tuberculosis have been compromised as they evolve into stronger, more drug-resistant forms.    » read more »
