Vermont: Petition Granted to Half Pint Farm to Erect Hoop House
Agency of Agriculture releases recommendation for hoop house installation at Half Pint Farm and the Intervale Center
April 15, 2008 -- Montpelier, Vt – The Agency of Agriculture released its decision to allow the construction of a hoop house at the Intervale Center and Half Pint Farm. Working collaboratively with the various partners involved including FEMA, the Intervale Center, the farmer, ANR and the city of Burlington, parameters for the construction have been established to ensure that the availability of flood insurance to residents of the city of Burlington is not jeopardized.

Vermont Drivers: Be Alert to Avoid Moose on the Highway
April 15, 2008 -- Waterbury, VT – Drivers need to be alert and cautious because moose are on the move, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. Moose are more likely to be crossing roadways at this time, especially after dark or early in the morning as they move from wintering areas to spring feeding locations.

More moose are hit by motorists in May and June than at any other time of the year. There is smaller peak of activity in September and October, the breeding season for moose. » read more »

Celebrate Health during National Public Health Week April 7-13
April 10, 2008 -- BURLINGTON – Each year, nearly one in five Vermont children and adolescents (nearly 29,000) will have a diagnosable mental health or addictive disorder, or a co-occurrence of both disorders. Without prevention, early screening and intervention, these problems can become more acute and severe and will take longer to heal.
According to the 2008 Health Status of Vermonters, 32 percent of girls in 10th grade reported being depressed in 2005, a rate for girls that is more than double the adult rate for women between the ages of 18 and 59. Young boys also experience a higher rate of depression than adult men (18 percent of 12th grade boys, 8-to-10 percent of men ages 18-59). » read more »

Vermont Joins Lawsuit To Require EPA To Comply

U.S. Prison Population Soars; Vermont Spends More on Prisons than Higher Education
WASHINGTON, February 28 – More than one in every 100 American adults is in jail or prison, according to new research on the nation’s surging inmate population. The same study also found that Vermont is one of only five states that spends more money on prisons than on higher education.
