Tennessee Governor Announces Additional Homeland Security Grants

09/14/2007 -- Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and Safety Commissioner David Mitchell today announced the state will receive an additional $20 million in reimbursement 2007 Homeland Security Grant funds. Tennessee Governor Bredesen Commutes Death Sentence

09/14/2007 -- Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen today commuted the death sentence of Michael Joe Boyd (also known as Mika’eel Abdullah Abdus-Samad) to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole citing grossly inadequate legal representation received by Boyd during his post conviction hearing and procedural limitations.

On March 10, 1988 Michael Joe Boyd was convicted of murder in the first degree in the perpetration of a robbery and was sentenced to death for this conviction.    » read more »

FedEx Launches Direct Express Delivery Service Between Manchester, U.K., and United States

August 28, 2007 -- FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the worlds largest express transportation company, announced today the launch of a dedicated direct flight between Manchester, U.K.,and the U.S.

FedEx will fly a wide-body MD-11 freighter daily, Monday through Thursday, between Manchester International Airport and Memphis, Tennessee, U.S. The flight, originating at the FedEx European Hub in Paris, will increase FedEx daily capacity on the important U.K. - to - U.S. route by up to 50% and from Europe to the U.S. by up to 20%.    » read more »

Study Shows Alcoa's Economic Impact on East Tennessee More than $4.7 Billion a Year

August 14, 2007 -- To most of the world, Alcoa Inc. means aluminum. To East Tennessee, it also means more than $4.7 billion a year.

That’s the finding in a new economic impact study done on Alcoa Inc.’s East Tennessee operations, which include facilities in Blount, Knox and Hamblen Counties. Through its operations and its impact on others, Alcoa creates and supports more than 12,000 jobs, and generates nearly $48.3 million in state and local tax revenues.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Two Army Casualties: Spc. Justin R. Blackwell, 27 and Pvt. Jeremy S. Bohannon, 18

August 07, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

They died Aug. 5 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy indirect fire.

They were assigned to the 59th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, and Fort Carson, Colo.

Killed were:

Spc. Justin R. Blackwell, 27, of Paris, Tennessee

Pvt. Jeremy S. Bohannon, 18, of Bon Aqua, Tennessee
