Tennessee Governor Bredesen Marks Milestone In Raising Education Bar In Tennessee

01/25/2008 -- Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen today heralded Tennessee’s progress in education with the passage of elevated graduation requirements and improved standards by the State Board of Education. Tennessee officially adopted more rigorous high school graduation requirements at the board’s quarterly meeting. The board also approved new math, science and English standards, which have been revised to be more competitive at a national level.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Six Army Casualties

January 11, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of six soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

They died Jan. 9 in Sinsil, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations.

They were assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany.

Killed were:

Spc. Todd E. Davis, 22, of Raymore, Mo.

Staff Sgt. Jonathan K. Dozier, 30, of Rutherford, Tenn.

Staff Sgt. Sean M. Gaul, 29, of Reno, Nev.    » read more »

Underwear Insurer Agrees to Pay for Environmental Cleanup

Washington, D.C., Jan. 9, 2008 -- The American International Specialty Lines Insurance Company Inc. (AISLIC) has agreed to pay $42.5 million to clean up contamination at four industrial facilities in a suit in which the Department of Justice intervened on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies. They died Oct. 30 of wounds suffered in Salman Pak, Iraq, when enemy forces engaged their unit with small arms fire and an improvised explosive device.

They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.

Killed were:

Sgt. Daniel L. McCall, 24, of Pace, Florida. He died in Baghdad, Iraq.    » read more »

Tennessee Governor Bredesen Celebrates Smoke-Free Tennessee

10/01/2007 -- Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen marked the first day of enforcement of the Non-Smokers Protection Act at an event today at Calhoun’s restaurant in Madison. The Act, which Bredesen signed into law on June 11, 2007, prohibits smoking in all enclosed public areas across the state with few exceptions.

“This is an important step that will have a positive effect on the health of all Tennesseans,” Bredesen said, “It’s also a historic occasion as Tennessee becomes the first traditional tobacco state to enact such a comprehensive statewide smoking ban.”    » read more »
