NC Gov. Perdue Announces $17 Million Grant to Expand Health Insurance to Uninsured Working Parents

Program based on Perdue’s health care campaign roadmap

9/14/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today announced that North Carolina has received a $17 million five-year grant to fund a pilot health program that extends health care coverage to uninsured, low income parents — as proposed in her campaign health care roadmap.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded the State Health Access Program (SHAP) grant to only 13 states, including North Carolina. The award will cover more than 1,500 low income, working families in North Carolina.    » read more »

21 North Carolina Highway Project Grants Awarded

8/31/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue announced today that 21 contracts totaling $50.8 million have been awarded for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina, including eight projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The contracts were awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation to the lowest respective bidder, as required by state law. A list of the projects is attached.

Baldor Electric Co. Expands in NC

Cleveland County Manufacturer to Add 114 Jobs

6/23/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today announced that Baldor Electric Co., an international supplier of industrial electric motors, mechanical power transmission products, drives and generators, will expand its Kings Mountain operations. The company plans to invest more than $12.2 million and create 114 jobs during the next three years. The announcement was made possible in part by a $157,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

“North Carolina’s manufacturing sector remains strong and diverse,” Gov. Perdue said. “Our state is attractive to growing companies because of our highly skilled workforce, business-friendly climate and tremendous quality of life.”    » read more »

Senator Hagan on ARRA Energy Grants For North Carolina Families

June 19, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today announced a $52 million grant to reduce energy bills for low-income North Carolina families. This funding to make homes more energy efficient will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Energy as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

NC Governor on School Bonds Bill

6/19/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today signed Senate Bill 754, enabling North Carolina schools to use interest-free bonds for school construction, repair and renovation as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

“Our children need a welcoming and encouraging learning environment, one that makes them excited to come to school every day,” Perdue said. “These bonds create a win-win situation – new jobs and better classrooms.”

The bill enables local education agencies to administer $275,772,000 in bonding authority for new, qualified school construction bonds (QSCB) and gives $56,699,000 in bonding authority to continue qualified zone academy bonds (QZAB).    » read more »

6/10/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today announced that 140 transit projects across the state will receive more than $103 million in funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Governor: Defense Department Spending Increased in North Carolina During FY 2008

6/5/2009 -- Fayetteville -- North Carolina Governor Bev. Perdue and the North Carolina Military Business Center (NCMBC) today announced that Department of Defense spending in North Carolina grew by 22 percent and exceeded $3.6 billion in federal fiscal year 2008 – an increase of $657 million from 2007 data.

Strategy: More Solar for Progress Energy

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 3, 2009) -- Progress Energy today unveiled an expanded solar energy strategy in the Carolinas and Florida -- including a range of new residential and commercial solar incentives and programs.

The company strategy, launched under the name SunSense, is expected to expand the scope and use of solar energy in the Carolinas and Florida by more than 100 megawatts over the next decade. The cost of implementing the program is expected to have minimal impact on customer bills.    » read more »

North Carolina Governor Perdue Welcomes Apple to North Carolina

6/3/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today announced that Apple has selected North Carolina as the location for a new data center. The company is expected to invest more than $1 billion in the project over nine years.

“North Carolina continues to be a prime location for growing and expanding global technology companies,” said Perdue. “We welcome Apple to North Carolina and look forward to working with the company as it begins providing a significant economic boost to local communities and the state.”

The announcement comes after Gov. Perdue this morning signed Senate Bill 575, which modifies the method by which capital-intensive businesses calculate corporate income tax liability in North Carolina.    » read more »

Duke Energy Carolinas Asks for 12.6% Rate Increase in North Carolina

June 2, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy Carolinas has filed a request with the North Carolina Utilities Commission to increase its North Carolina customer rates by approximately 12.6 percent.

If approved, the general rate changes are expected to be implemented no earlier than Jan. 1, 2010.

“Customers count on us to provide power that is affordable, reliable and clean. This rate increase helps ensure that we deliver on that commitment today and in the future,” said Brett Carter, president of Duke Energy Carolinas. “We recognize that this is a challenging time to ask customers to pay more for electricity, so we didn’t make this decision lightly.”    » read more »

North Carolina Governor Perdue Announces $62 Million in Crime Grants

5/29/2009 -- Raleigh -- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today announced the awarding of $62 million in grants to state and local agencies to improve community safety and assist crime victims.

After reviewing more than 520 grant applications, the Governor’s Crime Commission (GCC) made awards for 315 programs in 86 counties, five universities and six state agencies. The money will help efforts to stop gangs, fight juvenile delinquency, assist victims of domestic violence and provide updated equipment for law enforcement agencies.    » read more »

More than $1 Billion in Recovery Funds Now Available for North Carolina to Save Teaching Jobs and Drive Education Reform

Application for Part 1 of North Carolina’s State Stabilization Funds Approved Today

May 22, 2009 -- U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that more than $1 billion is now available for North Carolina under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. This funding will lay the foundation for a generation of education reform and help save hundreds of thousands of teaching jobs at risk of state and local budget cuts. North Carolina will be eligible to apply for another $409 million this fall. Today's funding is being made available per North Carolina's successful completion of Part 1 of the State Stabilization Application, which was made available on April 1st.    » read more »
