February 7, 2005 -- Concord, NH- Commissioner of Health and Human Services (DHHS) John A. Stephen and State Medical Director William Kassler called on the legislature to pass Senate Bill 108, which would allow DHHS to increase the number of tests for newborn children. The bill, whose prime sponsor is Senator Andre Martel of Manchester, is a request of DHHS and is scheduled to be heard before the Senate Health and Human Services Committee tomorrow, February 8, at 10:30 AM. » read more »

January 20, 2005 -- Concord, NH - The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) today responded to the news that cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death nationally for Americans under 85 with an increased call for testing and awareness of the disease. The news comes from the American Cancer Society's annual statistical report. The data show that mortality rates for both diseases have dropped, but that rates for cancer have declined less. The report estimates over 570,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. this year, with lung cancer listed as the leading cause of cancer death. » read more »
