Nebraska Governor Heineman Requests Federal Disaster Declaration in Response to Recent Flooding

June 5, 2007 -- (Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has submitted a formal request to President George W. Bush for a federal disaster declaration in the wake of flooding occurring in the southwest, southeast and central parts of the state.

The Governor signed a state emergency declaration following the first series of floods resulting from storms in early May. Additional counties are expected to be added as damage estimates from recent storms are compiled.    » read more »

Nebraska Governor Heineman Signs Bill Encouraging More Families to Save for College

May 29, 2007 -- (Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman signed LB 338 into law today, which increases the maximum annual income tax deduction for those contributing to the Nebraska educational savings plan trust.

The deduction will increase from the current $500 to $2,500 for households filing separate returns, and $1,000 to $5,000 for all other returns. The Nebraska Department of Revenue estimates that expanding the income tax deduction for contributions made to the Nebraska College Savings Plan will provide approximately $1 million in deductions each year.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Army Casualty: Pvt. William L. Bailey III, 29, of Bellevue, Nebraska

May 28, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Pvt. William L. Bailey III, 29, of Bellevue, Neb., died May 25, in Taji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

Bailey was assigned to the 755th Chemical Reconnaissance/Decontamination Company, Nebraska Army National Guard, O’Neill, Neb.

Nebraska Governor Heineman, NDA Announce Keith County Certification as Livestock Friendly

March 1, 2007 -- (Kearney, Neb.) Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman announced the official designation of Keith County as the fourth Livestock Friendly County in Nebraska under a state program coordinated by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA). Keith County joins Morrill, Hitchcock and Webster counties as Livestock Friendly. The Governor made the announcement during a luncheon session of the 19th Annual Governor's Ag Conference in Kearney.

"Keith County continues to make strong commitments supportive of rural development and agriculture," Gov. Heineman said. "This program recognizes the positive economic impact that a viable livestock industry has on communities across our state. Pursuing Livestock Friendly designation is evidence that local officials view their local livestock industry as a vital part of their future, and it shows they are prepared to pursue new opportunities."    » read more »
