December 6, 2007 -- (Lincoln, NE) Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman today ordered that all U.S. and state flags in Nebraska be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of yesterday’s mall shooting in Omaha.

Flags were to be lowered for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on Friday, Dec. 7, following a proclamation signed earlier this week by President George W. Bush. Flags in Nebraska will be lowered today and remain at half-staff through Sunday, Dec. 9.    » read more »

Omaha Gunman Kills Eight in US Shopping Mall Before Killing Self

06 December 2007 -- A 19-year-old man has killed eight people after opening fire with a rifle in a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska. Mike O'Sullivan reports, police say the gunman also injured five other people, two of them critically, before taking his own life.

Witnesses say the shooter fired on holiday shoppers from a third-floor balcony of a busy department store. Some people fled and others barricaded themselves in dressing rooms or hid beneath clothing racks.

One witness told NBC News what he heard.

"I heard bang, bang, bang. I probably heard 12 to 15 shots," he said.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Army Casualty: Pfc. Christopher F. Pfeifer, 21, of Spalding, Nebraska

September 27, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Pfc. Christopher F. Pfeifer, 21, of Spalding, Nebraska, died Sept. 25 in San Antonio, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire Aug. 17 near Kamu, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Schweinfurt, Germany.
