Mexico Assesses Hurricane Dean's Impact on Oil Industry

23 August 2007 -- Mexico has reopened two of its three main oil ports following Hurricane Dean, but officials say production remains suspended as they assess the storm's impact on the industry.

The storm slammed into Mexico's Gulf coast Wednesday, but has weakened to a tropical depression since moving inland. Prior to the storm's arrival, tens of thousands of oil workers were evacuated from the region, as were residents in low-lying areas.    » read more »

Hurricane Dean: Hurricane Dean Hits Mexico for Second Time

22 August 2007 -- Hurricane Dean made landfall in Mexico again, battering the nation's central coast with winds of 160 kilometers per hour. In Miami, VOA's Brian Wagner reports that forecasters are warning of possible flooding and mudslides.

Hurricane Dean came ashore near the Mexican city of Veracruz and quickly began weakening as it moved west over the central part of the country.

Mexican officials said they had evacuated thousands of residents from coastal areas to schools, churches and other buildings that would offer protection against strong winds and possible flooding.    » read more »

Hurricane Dean: Hurricane Dean Hits Mexico, Loses Strength

21 August 2007 -- Hurricane Dean made landfall on Mexico's Caribbean coast and quickly began losing power as it moved inland. Forecasters warn the storm may regain strength later Tuesday when it moves back into open waters.

The eye of Hurricane Dean made landfall for the first time early Tuesday, battering Mexico's coastline on the Yucatan peninsula, where scores of residents and tourists took refuge from heavy winds and rain. Weather forecasters said it was a category 5 storm at the time of impact, with maximum sustained winds of 257 kilometers per hour.    » read more »
