Representatives Admonish Transportation Secretary For Keeping Border Open To Trucks From Mexico

February 7, 2008 -- (Washington, D.C.) – Transportation Secretary Mary Peters today was told point blank by three members of Congress to close the border to trucks from Mexico.

Peters kept the border open after a law was enacted to close it. The U.S. Senate voted 75 to 23 and the House voted 411 to 3 to forbid funding for the unsafe pilot project allowing Mexican trucks to use U.S. highways.

The legislation became law on December 26, 2007 as part of the Omnibus budget bill.    » read more »

Reports say Mexico Has Issued Warrant for US Marine Murder Suspect

29 January 2008 -- News reports say a Mexican court has issued an arrest warrant for a U.S. Marine suspected in the killing of his pregnant colleague.

U.S. officials believe 21-year-old Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean fled to his native Mexico to avoid prosecution.

Laurean is a suspect in the death of Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, who was eight months pregnant when she disappeared in December.

Authorities found her burned remains in the backyard of Laurean's North Carolina home on January 11.    » read more »

22 January 2008 -- Mexico's federal police raided two mansions in the capital and arrested 11 alleged gunmen for the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel. At the same time, Mexican soldiers carried out operations to disarm local police in the state of Tamaulipas, which borders the U.S. state of Texas. These actions, along with the arrest of a major drug trafficking figure on Monday, are part of a major crackdown on organized crime.

US Sanctions 23 Mexicans for Alleged Drug Ties

12 December 2007 -- The United States has sanctioned a group of Mexican people and Mexican businesses for allegedly serving as fronts for the Sinaloa drug ring.

The White House Wednesday announced 23 individuals and 19 businesses in Mexico will face sanctions under the "Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act."

The move prevents those named from doing business with Americans or using the U.S. financial system.    » read more »
