Over $16 Million In Federal Grant Funding Coming To California For Specialty Crops

10.15.09 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – Approximately $16.3 million in federal grant funding will be coming to California to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. Congressman Jim Costa (D-Fresno) helped to fight for increased specialty crop funding during the Farm Bill debate in 2008. California received more than four times the amount of the next highest state.

“These funds are a triple win for our state, our agriculture industry and our local economy,” Costa said. “Our Valley leads the nation in growing crops like almonds, peaches, and table grapes. Anything we can do which will expand and improve specialty crop production and sales benefits our farms, farm workers and farm communities.”    » read more »

Rep. Costa Opposes Bay Area Water Recycling Bill

10.15.09 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jim Costa (D-Fresno) voted against the Bay Area Regional Water Recycling Program Expansion Act of 2009 today because it offered no assistance to the water crisis in the San Joaquin Valley. Rep. Cardoza, USDA Announce Specialty Crop Grants

October 15, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Dennis Cardoza today joined with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in announcing $49 million in grants for specialty crops, such as those grown in Merced, Stanislaus, and San Joaquin Counties.

California – a significant producer of more than 350 different fruits, vegetables and tree nuts – will be awarded $16.3 million through the Specialty Crop Block Grant program. In previous years such crops have not received significant recognition in the Farm Bill.    » read more »

10/12/2009 -- Further laying the groundwork for California to reach its environmental goals, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in order to expedite the siting of California renewable energy projects.

California is the first state to sign an MOU with the Department of the Interior (DOI) to cooperatively develop long-term renewable energy plans and to sheppard eligible projects through state and federal permitting processes that can receive 30 percent federal tax credits under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (Recovery Act).    » read more »
