Southern Company Reports Third Quarter Earnings
ATLANTA, Oct. 28 -- Southern Company (NYSE: SO) today reported third quarter earnings of $790.0 million, or 99 cents a share, compared with $780.4 million, or $1.01 a share, in the same period a year ago.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, Southern Company's earnings were $1.39 billion, or $1.77 a share, compared with $1.56 billion, or $2.02 a share, for the same period a year ago. Excluding certain items described below, Southern Company earned $2.02 a share for the first nine months of 2009, compared with $2.11 a share for the same period in 2008. » read more »
Southern Company to Build Biomass Plant in East Texas
ATLANTA, Oct. 9 -- Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company that acquires, builds, manages and owns wholesale generation assets, today announced that it is acquiring Nacogdoches Power, LLC from American Renewables, LLC and will move ahead with construction of the planned biomass power plant in Sacul, Texas.
Groundbreaking is expected in the fall of 2009 and commercial operation is projected for the summer of 2012. When completed, the project will be one of the largest biomass-fueled electric generating facilities in the U.S., capable of generating approximately 100 megawatts.
The plant's output is committed through a 20-year power purchase agreement with Austin Energy, the municipal utility owned by and serving Austin, Texas. » read more »
Southern Company, U. of Alabama Birmingham to Partner on Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project
ATLANTA, Oct. 6 -- Southern Company said today it will help train students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in carbon sequestration engineering under a project that adds to efforts advancing the commercialization of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power production.
The research project, selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will help develop an educated work force to support commercial utility-scale geologic sequestration activities in the future, said Richard Esposito, Southern Company principal geologist. » read more »

Public-private partnership will focus on developing technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal-based electricity generation
ATLANTA, May 27 -- Southern Company today announced it will manage and operate the U.S. Department of Energy's new National Carbon Capture Center, which will develop and test advanced technologies to capture carbon dioxide from coal-based power plants.
The center, a partnership between DOE and leading energy companies, is located at the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF), a research and development complex south of Birmingham, Ala. » read more »
Southern Company to Demonstrate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reducing Technology Electric Generating Plant
ATLANTA, May 26 -- Southern Company last week announced plans to demonstrate carbon capture and sequestration on a coal-fired power generation plant to support the development of technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Along with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI), the Electric Power Research Institute and other partners, Southern Company will build a demonstration facility to capture carbon dioxide emissions from an existing unit of subsidiary Alabama Power's Plant Barry near Mobile, Ala.
Beginning in 2011, between 100,000 and 150,000 tons of CO2 per year - the equivalent of emissions from 25 megawatts of the plant's generating capacity - would be captured for permanent underground storage in a deep saline geologic formation. » read more »
