Full Senate Approves 74 Million For Hawaii Commerce, Justice, Science Projects

November 5, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. Inouye announced today that the full Senate has approved $74,753,000 for Hawaii commerce, justice and science initiatives including protection for marine wildlife, climate change research, and programs for at-risk, rural youth.

The federal funds for Hawaii-related projects were approved as part of the Fiscal Year 2010 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Bill.

The bill passed by a vote of 71 to 28, with Chairman Inouye and Senator Daniel K. Akaka supporting the bill. The bill must now face a joint House-Senate Conference and final approval by the Senate and House, before it is transmitted to the White House.    » read more »

Honolulu to Receive $3 million for Energy Efficiency Initiatives

October 30, 2009 -- WASHINGTON -- Honolulu will receive $3,863,700 to fund energy efficient initiatives including the reduction of fossil fuel emissions, the creation of green jobs, and the implementation of practices that lessen overall energy use, Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka announced today.

The federal funds are made available to Honolulu through the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award.

Hawaii Will Receive More Than $17 Million For Interior And Environment Projects

October 29, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. Inouye announced today that Hawaii will receive $17,410,000 for interior and environment projects including wildlife refuges, tropical landscape management and the preservation of endangered Native Hawaiian birds.

The federal funds for Hawaii-related projects were approved as part of the Fiscal Year 2010 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill.

October 6, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - Defense projects in Hawaii will receive $207.5 million in federal funds during the coming fiscal year for an array of projects including satellite deployment, space surveillance, improvements to the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and the development of tactical technology, Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. The spending measure passed by a vote of 93-7.

June 02, 2009 -- WASHINGTON -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today that the City and County of Honolulu will receive a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to help underprivileged young parents obtain education and occupational skills training that lead to employment.

The grant will allow mothers, expectant mothers, and fathers ages 16 to 24 to receive training that will help provide a better future for themselves and their children. Senator Inouye: Hawaii To Receive Nearly $7 Million In Federal Grants For Airport Improvements

May 29, 2009 -- WASHINGTON --- Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. Inouye announced today that the State will receive two airport-related grants totaling more than $7 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation, including one for more than $6.8 million to construct a new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station west of the existing ARFF station at Molokai Airport.

Construction on the new ARFF station is expected to start in September 2009. The new facility will be sound-proof and will accommodate two ARFF trucks, three dormitory rooms, a kitchen, fitness center, dining room, and watch alarm roof.

In addition, an automated weather observing station, operated by the Federal Aviation Administration, will be relocated to the new ARFF station.    » read more »

Hawaii Receives $10.2 Million In Unemployment Insurance Modernization Funds

Department of Labor releases funds from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

May 19, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel K. Inouye and Senator Daniel K. Akaka confirmed last week that Hawaii will receive $10.2 million in unemployment insurance (UI) modernization funds, which was certified by the U.S. Department of Labor. Hawaii qualified for the funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) by meeting the federal requirements of allowing workers to use their more recent earnings to be eligible for benefits.

The Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations can use the funds to pay unemployment benefits or, if appropriated by the legislature, for administering its unemployment insurance program or delivering employment services.    » read more »

$4.5 Million Stimulus Funds Will Fight Invasive Species in Hawaii

Akaka announced last week that the State of Hawaii will receive $4,486,000 to fight invasive plant species across the islands. The United States Department of Agriculture is distributing the funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
