Hour-long Big Ten Awards Show to air Friday night at 10 PM ET

CHICAGO, June 18, 2008 – The Big Ten Network will honor the conference's top plays, games, performers and performances of 2007-08 during the Big Ten Awards Show. The hour-long program, hosted by Dave Revsine, Mike Hall and Rick Pizzo, debuts at 10 PM ET Friday. NCAA Selects 28 College Football Coaches for Expert Coaches Academy in Dallas

INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, June 3, 2008 -- The NCAA has invited 28 football coaches to its 2008 NCAA Expert Coaches Academy, which takes place June 5-7 in Dallas, Texas.

The Expert Coaches Academy is an NCAA program that addresses the critical shortage of ethnic minorities in head coaching positions in the sport of college football, primarily at the Division I level. Though the NCAA National Office does not have hiring authority over its member colleges and universities, the office is able to provide programming that better prepares coaches for many of the issues they will experience at the head coaching level through program sessions and networking opportunities with current head coaches.

SEC Joins BIG EAST in Birmingham’s Papajohns.com Bowl in 2008

April 30, 2008 -- ESPN Regional Television (ERT) today announced that the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., will host a matchup between the BIG EAST Conference and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) starting in 2008.

The matchup between a bowl-eligible team from the SEC and one from the BIG EAST came about as the result of negotiations between the two conferences and Conference USA, and with the approval of the NCAA Postseason Bowl Committee. NCAA Division III Membership Survey Results Released

Thursday, April 10, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- Nearly 82 percent of NCAA Division III member schools support or strongly support the current Division III structure instead of the creation of a new division or subdivision, results of the Division III Membership Survey show.

The response rate to the survey was 96 percent. All 442 active and provisional members of Division III were requested to submit a survey.

In light of the survey results, the Division III Working Group on Membership Issues and the Executive Committee Working Group on Membership have concluded their work to address the membership growth and diversity in Division III.    » read more »

NCAA Sponsors Women in College Sports Forum in Tampa April 6

Wednesday, March 26, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- As part of NCAA Women’s Final Four activities in Tampa, the NCAA is sponsoring a Women in College Sports Forum on Sunday, April 6.

Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. at the Tampa Hyatt Regency, Regency Ballrooms I-III. Leaders in women’s intercollegiate athletics will discuss the portrayal of female athletes in the media; lessons learned from successful women in athletics and life/work balance, among other topics. NCAA Statement Regarding Potential Secondary Violation Involving University of Connecticut

Friday, March 14, 2008 -- Despite recent media reports to the contrary, the NCAA has not ruled on a potential secondary violation involving University of Connecticut freshman Maya Moore. While the NCAA has worked cooperatively with the university, the institution has not yet filed the appropriate documents necessary for the Association to process this case.

The university has acknowledged that a member of the coaching staff impermissibly arranged for Moore to be granted a tour of ESPN studios and that such an arrangement is not available to the general public.

NCAA Announces Recipients of Division I Women's Basketball Grant Program

Friday, March 14, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA is awarding approximately $750,000 in women’s basketball grants to 12 Division I institutions and five conferences as part of the newly established NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Grant Program.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has penalized Brigham Young University for major and secondary violations in its men's volleyball program. This case primarily involves violations of NCAA recruiting rules, including impermissible transportation, housing, meals, employment, cash and clothing, among other impermissible benefits. These impermissible benefits were provided by representatives of the institution's athletics interests (boosters). NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions Penalizes Texas Christian University Men's Tennis Program

Thursday, February 28, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has penalized Texas Christian University for major and secondary violations in its men's tennis program. This case involves impermissible phone contacts and a failure to monitor by the institution and the former head coach.

The violations include 105 impermissible phone calls made by members of the men's tennis coaching staff to 24 prospective student-athletes during the four years from summer of 2002 through the spring of 2006. More than 70 calls were made by the former head coach.    » read more »
