JBS Merger Could Impact Oklahoma Cattle Producers
05/29/2008 -- The proposed acquisition of National Beef Packing Company and Smithfield Beef Group by Brazilian meat company JBS could have implications for Oklahoma cattle producers, OKlahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said today.

In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Edmondson said by taking over National Beef and Smithfield, JBS will become the largest beef processor in the nation and the new company could have a significant impact on the feedlot segment of the beef industry. » read more »

Senator Boxer Applauds USDA Move to Close Downer Cattle Loophole

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson Announces Reopening of Mexican Border to US Cattle
May 8, 2008 -- SANTA FE – New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and New Mexico Agriculture Secretary Miley Gonzalez announced that Mexico has reopened its border to U.S. cattle, paving the way for a cattle crossing Wednesday evening at Santa Teresa. This is the first cattle export to Mexico since many countries banned U.S. beef and beef products in 2003 as a result of Mad Cow Disease in the Pacific Northwest.

Minnesota Governor Pawlenty Announces Additional USDA Funding To Fight Bovine Tuberculosis In The State
April 2, 2008 -- Saint Paul – Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allocated $2.7 million in emergency funding to fight bovine tuberculosis (TB) in Minnesota.
Following his visit to northwestern Minnesota last month, Governor Pawlenty asked U.S Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer to expedite federal efforts to cull infected cattle and to allocate additional resources for the fight against bovine TB.
