Cash for Clunkers Wraps up with Nearly 700,000 car sales and increased fuel efficiency

August 26, 2009 -- The CARS program came to a close Tuesday night with nearly 700,000 clunkers taken off the roads, replaced by far more fuel efficient vehicles. Rebate applications worth $2.877 billion were submitted by the 8 p.m. deadline, under the $3 billion provided by Congress to run the program.

Cars made in America topped the most-purchased list, from the Ford Focus to the Toyota Corolla to the Honda Civic.    » read more »

Legislation part of Final Supplemental Appropriations of 2009, Will be sent to President for his Signature

June 18, 2009 -- Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today praised Senate passage of “Cash for Clunkers” legislation, which was part of the final Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009. Once signed into law, the program will allow consumers to trade in older, dirtier vehicles in exchange for a voucher of up to $4,500 to help pay for the purchase or qualified lease of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

June 9, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. – The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Alliance) today praised the House of Representatives for supporting a fleet modernization, or “cash for clunkers,” bill sponsored by Representative Betty Sutton and a broad, bipartisan group of lawmakers. Proposal would achieve 32 to 38 percent greater oil savings than House compromise

Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Tom Carper (D-Del.) today formally introduced legislation to establish a “Cash for Clunkers” program that incentivizes the purchase of more fuel efficient vehicles and would achieve at least 32 percent more oil savings than a House version of the bill.
