Resolution Recognizing 75th Anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Passes Congress
June 3, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – Resolutions to recognize the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park passed both the Senate and House last night. The resolutions were sponsored by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) in the Senate; and by Congressmen Phil Roe (R-Tenn. 1) and Jimmy Duncan (R-Tenn. 2) in the House.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, attracting over nine million visitors each year. The park today covers approximately 521,621 acres of land in both states, making it the largest protected area in the eastern United States. » read more »

“I’ve spent the past 24 hours on the phone with GM officials, the auto task force, Governor Bredesen, and the local mayors and economic development officials.
“I’m obviously very disappointed in the decision by GM officials and the administration to idle our Spring Hill plant but glad it’s idled for a period and not closed and certainly happy for the 600 Tennesseans that will remain employed. May 21, 2009 -- WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), along with Senators Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), successfully added language to the supplemental appropriations bill (H.R. 2346) requiring the Obama administration to submit an initial report to Congress on the benchmarks for U.S. policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan and regular progress reports thereafter towards achieving those objectives.
