Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Ventures to Middle Earth for “The Lord of the Rings”
Beverly Hills, CA, June 23, 2008 — The 2001 Best Picture nominee “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Great To Be Nominated” series. The fantasy about a hobbit and his epic quest to end the reign of evil in his land by destroying an ancient ring will screen on Monday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Following the screening, producer Barrie Osborne, executive producer Mark Ordesky, film editor John Gilbert, supervising sound editor Ethan Van der Ryn, Oscar®-winning visual effects supervisor Jim Rygiel and U.S. casting director Victoria Burrows will participate in a discussion about the film. » read more »
Academy Invites 105 to Become Members
Beverly Hills, CA, June 23, 2008 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 105 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2008 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.

Rules Approved for 81st Academy Awards
Beverly Hills, CA, June 19, 2008 –– The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved the rules for the 81st Academy Awards® at their Tuesday evening (6/17) meeting. The only significant changes were in the Music – Original Song category. Other modifications of the rules include normal date changes and minor “housekeeping” changes.
Three items of note were altered in the Original Song rules. First, while there continues to be no limit on the number of songs from a given film that can be submitted for consideration, no more than two songs from any one film may be nominated for an Academy Award. » read more »

An Academy Tribute to Jimmy Stewart
Beverly Hills, CA, May 27, 2008 — Actresses Shirley Jones, Ann Rutherford and Carroll Baker will join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a special centennial tribute to Academy Award®-winning actor James Stewart on Thursday, June 12, at 8 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The celebration will feature film clips and onstage conversations with Stewarts’ friends and colleagues as well as daughters Kelly Stewart Harcourt and Judy Stewart Merrill.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Revisits Old West with New Print
Beverly Hills, CA, May 16, 2008 – As part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Gold Standard screening series, the epic “Once upon a Time in the West” will be presented on Friday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The screening celebrates the West Coast premiere of a new restoration, courtesy of Paramount Pictures, and marks the 40th anniversary of the film’s 1968 release in Italy. Academy to Screen Double Feature of Hitchcock Classics
March 26, 2008, Beverly Hills, CA – As part of its Gold Standard series and in conjunction with its Fourth Floor Gallery exhibition “Casting a Shadow: Creating the Alfred Hitchcock Film,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a double feature of Hitchcock films, “Shadow of a Doubt” and “Lifeboat,” on Friday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. New prints of both films from the Academy Film Archive will be screened.
“Shadow of a Doubt,” the 1943 thriller starring Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten,received an Academy Award® nomination for Writing – Original Motion Picture Story (Gordon McDonell). The film is set in Santa Rosa, California, where small-town bliss is interrupted by an evil visitor. » read more »
Short Films of 1907 Return to New York City and Washington D.C.
March 19, 2008, New York, NY – “The Dancing Pig,” “The Haunted Hotel” and “The Teddy Bears” will be among more than a dozen early short films screened at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Monday Nights with Oscar®” presentation of “A Century Ago: The Films of 1907,” on Monday, April 7, at the Academy Theater in New York City. The program will repeat on Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. at the National Archives’ William G. McGowan Theater in Washington, D.C.
“A Century Ago: The Films of 1907” will present a partial survey of turn-of-the-20th-century international filmmaking with trick films, actualities, primitive dramas and gag films, all produced during this year of creative expansion. » read more »
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Popular “Great To Be Nominated” Plays on with “The Piano”
March 19, 2008, Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ popular “Great To Be Nominated” series begins its fifth and final installment on Monday, April 21, with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.” The 17-week series, which will run through August 25, will showcase the film from each Academy Awards® year between 1993 and 2007 that received the most nominations without winning the Oscar® for Best Picture. All screenings will be held on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
