August 26, 2008 -- NEW YORK - Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 27, Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, will join Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation's first and largest nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, at a nonpartisan service event in Denver.
Mrs. Obama, along with her mother, Marian Robinson, daughters, Malia and Sasha, and Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter, will join IAVA veterans, military families and local residents when they assemble care package for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, rock band Greater Good will perform at the event. J.R. Denson, Greater Good's lead singer, lost his brother-in-law, Lt. Peter Burks, to a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2007
"IAVA is pleased that Mrs. Obama and her family are focusing on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans during this convention week," said Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). "IAVA looks forward to joining forces with Mrs. Obama, local IAVA members, military families and Denver residents to let the men and women serving in harm's way know we appreciate their service. As the festivities roll on in Denver and Minneapolis, IAVA is proud to give local residents a way to give thanks to those serving in Baghdad and Kabul."
