Rep. Hill on False Claims about Medicare under Health Care Reform Bill

November 13, 2009 -- (Washington, DC) - Congressman Baron Hill issued the following statement addressing false claims circulating about how the Affordable Health Care for America Act would impact seniors:

“This week, I have heard from several Southern Indiana seniors who are justifiably concerned by what they’re hearing from a group outside Indiana regarding how Medicare would be affected by the health care reform bill. This group is being disingenuous, scaring folks with alarming and false claims, and as such, I’d like to set the record straight.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act will not result in cuts to Medicare benefits. Even the nonpartisan outlet FactCheck.org called such claims about Medicare cuts ‘simply rubbish.’ AARP has even endorsed the bill. In fact, here is how the House-passed health care reform bill would affect Medicare beneficiaries: lower drug costs by gradually closing the “donut hole” for prescription drug reimbursement; ensure free preventative care – eliminating copayments – and better primary care; improve low-income subsidy programs, including under the part D program, to help ensure Medicare is affordable for those with low and modest incomes.

I would encourage those with questions about this bill and how it might impact them to please contact my office.”
