Hodes Supports Resolution Honoring New Hampshire National Guard

November 10, 2009 -- Washington, DC -- Today, Congressman Paul Hodes praised the New Hampshire National Guard for their service to the Granite State and to the nation. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter and Congressman Hodes have introduced House Resolution 899, to honor the New Hampshire National Guard.

"New Hampshire’s National Guardsmen and women have served at home and abroad with tremendous courage," said Congressman Paul Hodes. "This resolution honors the personal sacrifices that these Granite Staters have made, while recognizing their service to our country during national emergencies and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

House Resolution 899 recognizes that members of the New Hampshire National Guard were first responders to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and proceeded to secure New Hampshire’s airspace and airports in the days following the attacks. It also acknowledges that half of the New Hampshire Army National Guard was deployed overseas on 18 month tours of duty during the year 2004.

Between 2004 and 2007, over 1,500 members of the New Hampshire National Guard were placed on active duty abroad in places including Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Kosovo. The New Hampshire National Guard has also played a pivotal role in responding to natural disasters, including the 2007 floods in New Hampshire.

"Our guardsmen and women take precious and substantial time out of their lives to help Granite State residents when disaster strikes," added Congressman Hodes. "The New Hampshire National Guard should be recognized and honored for their service."
