Secures $4 Million for the Fort Madison Bridge and Funding for FEMA and Disaster Mitigation Projects

Washington, Oct 19 - Congressman Loebsack secured critical investments for Iowa in the FY 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill. The bill makes critical investments in disaster funding, including funding for FEMA management, disaster relief, and flood map modernization, and disaster relief loans.

The bill also makes critical improvements in securing vital infrastructure such as aviation systems, ports, and surface transit while also including aid for our brave first responders.

“This bill makes both short-term and long-term investments in disaster relief: increasing funds for disaster relief to aid our families struggling with existing damage while at the same time increasing funds that focus on flood planning and prevention,” said Congressman Loebsack. “The floods of last year reminded us of the need for flood prevention measures and the importance of disaster planning and prevention. At a time when local budgets are strained, these funds will greatly aid our communities in their recovery efforts.”

In addition to disaster relief funds, the fiscally responsible bill targets dollars to other pressing and high-priority needs. The Congressman worked tirelessly to secure funds to repair and rebuild vital infrastructure in the Second District of Iowa. Given the vital role that our roads and bridges play for members of the community, the Congressman worked to secure $4 million to replace the Fort Madison Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge, which has been designated as a hazard by the US Coast Guard.

“Our bridges are critical to our economy and provide links to work, school, and groceries for Iowa families,” noted Congressman Loebsack. “Making the repairs necessary for safe travel is a top priority not only for the security of our loved ones but also for the expansion of economic development in our communities. It is essential that we continue to work to revitalize our infrastructure and critical that we work to ensure that our travel is safe and efficient.”

"The Santa Fe Bridge at Fort Madison is critical to our local and regional economies. We appreciate the federal investment in such important regional infrastructure,” added Fort Madison Mayor Steve Ireland.

The Disaster Funding included in the Homeland Security Bill includes funding for: Disaster Relief, Flood Map Modernization, Emergency Food and Shelter, Disaster Assistance Loans, National Flood Insurance Fund, and Pre-Disaster Hazard Mitigation Grants.
