10/05/2009 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement congratulating Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak after they won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the key mechanism in the genetic operation of cells, an insight that has inspired new lines of research into cancer.

Blackburn is a professor of biology and physiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Greider was born in San Diego:

“Maria and I join all Californians in congratulating Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak on their tremendous achievement. It is inspiring and exciting to see new breakthroughs in science and medicine made in our state. California has always been a leader in research and innovation and I am proud of the outstanding work done by these three individuals. I am excited to see what future advances will be made in medicine because of their work.”
