Senator Burris Announces Recovery Act Funding to Decatur for Carbon Capture and Storage Projects

October 5, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – United States Senator Roland W. Burris today announced that U.S. Department of Energy funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are being allotted to Decatur for carbon capture and storage projects.

Description of the award is as follows:

· $1,480,656 to the Archer Daniels Midland Corporation in Decatur, IL: Archer Midland Company, a member of the Department of Energy’s Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium, will join other research organizations to demonstrate Dow ALSTOM’s advanced amine process to capture CO2 from industrial flue gases and sequester the CO2 in the Mt. Simon Sandstone reservoir.

Senator Burris and the Democratic-led Congress passed the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act that was signed into law by President Obama in February.

“I am pleased that vital Recovery Act funds are being directed to Decatur for this important environmental project.” said Senator Burris. “These funds will ensure that America is leading the way on climate change and working its way towards an economy that includes clean energy.”

Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the first round of funding from the $1.4 billion from the Recovery Act for the selection of 12 projects that will capture carbon dioxide from industrial sources for storage and valuable use. The first phase of these projects will include $21.6 million in Recovery Act funding and $22.5 million in private funding for a total initial investment of $44.1 million. The remaining Recovery Act funding will be awarded to the most promising projects during a competitive phase two selection process.
