Federal recovery-funded projects create jobs, improve infrastructure

July 8, 2009 -- DES MOINES – Today, Iowa Governor Chet Culver announced that $16.6 million in infrastructure projects – including one county road project valued at $1.4 million and three state highway projects at $15.2 million – have been let by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

These projects are funded in total or part through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). Acceptance of the low-bid proposals and awarding of contracts is contingent upon final approval of the respective parties. These projects were let by the Iowa DOT on June 30, 2009.

“These shovel-ready projects will create good jobs for Iowans while making lasting improvements to our transportation infrastructure,” said Governor Culver. “As Governor, I am committed to seeing these funds utilized quickly to put Iowans back to work. And combined with the I-JOBS program, these federal dollars will help us rebuild our state and economy.”

Projects announced today, and the amount of federal funding, include:

KOSSUTH COUNTY: $1.4 million to resurface Route R14
MAHASKA COUNTY: $7.5 million to widen and resurface U.S. 63
RINGGOLD AND UNION COUNTY: $7.7 million to widen and resurface U.S. 169

Iowa will receive approximately $358 million for state and local roadway, bridge and trails projects through the Recovery Act. In addition, Governor Culver’s $830 million I-JOBS initiative will provide $115 million for transportation projects throughout the state. Signed into law in May, I-JOBS was the Culver/Judge Administration’s top legislative priority for the 2009 session.

Combined with regular state and federal highway funds, and carry-over work from the 2008 construction season, Iowa will set an all-time record for highway and bridge spending in the 2009 construction season.
