Governor Doyle and Members of Administration to Donate Time to Organizations

June 22, 2009 -- MADISON, MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle today called on Wisconsin residents to answer President Obama’s call to service, “United We Serve,” a sustained effort to help in our nation’s recovery by calling on Americans to volunteer in their communities. The Governor kicked-off the United We Serve national community service campaign in Wisconsin today by volunteering in Madison and Milwaukee.

“I am pleased to announce that here in Wisconsin we are answering the President’s call to serve,” Governor Doyle said. “I will spend the summer taking part in service and volunteer activities around the state and am asking my cabinet secretaries and administration to do the same. Wisconsin and America are facing major challenges from an economy that is collapsing around the world. During these extraordinary times we must work together to protect our most basic priorities.”

Governor Doyle and members of his Administration will lead by example by donating their time at numerous organizations around the state this summer. Today, Governor Doyle passed out lunches to children during Goodman Community Center’s Summer Lunch Program in Madison and helped put together produce baskets at Growing Power in Milwaukee.

Today marks the official start of President Obama’s United We Serve Initiative. First Lady Michelle Obama and Cabinet Secretaries are leading service efforts around the country today, and highlighting organizations that will be participating in this effort. The President is asking the entire country to work together during these extraordinary times to get our country back on track.

The summer long effort will conclude with a National Day of Service on September 11, a chance to both celebrate the hard work that will have taken place over the course of the previous two and a half months and to honor the Americans who died on September 11, 2001 by recommitting to serve in the future.

The United We Serve Initiative was conceived as a way to directly involve Americans in tackling problems in their communities.

In Wisconsin there are numerous ways to give back. To learn about opportunities in your area or to suggest volunteer events, please visit Serve.Gov or contact the Governor’s office at govserve@wisconsin.gov or 608-266-1212.
