HUD Grants Missouri Disaster Funds
Missouri to Receive Nearly $79 Million in Disaster Recovery Funds
June 10, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kit Bond announced today that Missouri will receive nearly $79 million in federal dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to be used for recovery and clean-up efforts following a federally declared disaster.
“Unfortunately we in Missouri know all too well the damage that Mother Nature can inflict on families, homes and businesses. These funds will help hard-hit cities and rural communities rebuild and recover,” said Bond.
As the ranking member of the Senate subcommittee that funds HUD, the Senator helped to appropriate $3.97 billion for HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Disaster Recovery Funds in emergency supplemental funding in September 2008 in response to flooding in the Midwest. The $78,625,549 Bond announced for Missouri today is part of that money.
Additionally, HUD will reserve $311.7 million in the Disaster Recovery Enhancement Fund for later allocation to states that develop forward thinking recovery strategies, such as relocation payments for families to move out of areas of severe risk for future disasters.
Every year Bond fights to provide federal assistance to cities, communities and states to help with recovery from federally declared disasters. This funding is especially important to rural states like Missouri as many rural communities do not have the resources to clean-up and rebuild following these disasters.
