Senator Mikulski Statement on Selection of Maryland's M&T Bank Stadium, FedEx Field to Host Upcoming Army-Navy Football Games

09-Jun-2009 -- WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors since 1987, issued the following statement after it was announced today that the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and the FedEx Field in Landover have been selected to host three Army-Navy football games between 2010 and 2017:

“Today’s announcement is great news for Maryland! I attended the last Army-Navy football game in Baltimore - what a treat that was. The event filled the Ravens stadium to capacity. Marylanders had the opportunity to see the storied rivalry played out on their turf, while visitors got to take in the sights and sounds of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor – and see all the city has to offer.”

“I am so proud that two Maryland stadiums have now been selected to host three Army-Navy Games between 2010 and 2017, and I personally look forward to witnessing these great match-ups.”

The FedEx Field in Landover, Md., has been selected to host the 2011 Army-Navy football game. The M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore has been selected to host the games in 2014 and 2016.

Baltimore has hosted the game four times: twice at M&T Bank Stadium (2000, 2007) and twice at Municipal Stadium (1924, 1944). The highly anticipated game, which has roots back to 1890, draws service members and alumni from both academies, and is a favorite of many other fans for its tradition and ceremony. It is estimated that hosting the game could pump as much as $22 million into the area’s economy.

Earlier this year, Senator Mikulski sent letters to senior officials at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis involved in the selection of Army-Navy game sites expressing her strong support for the State of Maryland’s bid to host the upcoming Army-Navy football games.
