Harkin Announces $600,000 For Rural Development Projects In Kossuth And Pocahontas Counties

June 9, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that $600,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be coming to Iowa for two economic development projects.

The USDA Rural Development project funds will provide grants to rural utilities program borrowers, which will be used to benefit the Kossuth Regional Health Center and the Pocahontas Area Community School District. Harkin is Chairman of Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

“Grants such as these help our rural communities continue to thrive and stay economically competitive,” said Harkin. “This money will not only be used to make physical improvements, but will also create and save jobs in Iowa. I congratulate the recipients for receiving this competitive funding and look forward to the improvements they generate.”

The projects are as follows:

• The Corn Belt Power Cooperative will receive a grant of $300,000 to provide funds to the Kossuth Regional Health Center, a county public hospital, to assist with plans for a major renovation project in the community of Algona.

• The City of Pocahontas will receive a grant of $300,000 to loan funds to the Pocahontas Area Community School District to assist with the purchase of new technology and energy efficiency equipment.
