Senator Ben Cardin on Return of Science to EPA
June 9, 2009 -- Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) and Chairman of its Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, participated in a hearing today with Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Scientific Integrity and Transparency Reforms at the EPA.
"Starting in the very early days of his administration, President Obama has acted consistently to place science and not politics at the forefront of American policy. I don’t intend to fan partisan flames by rehashing the last eight years, but I am greatly concerned about the legacy of Bush EPA policies that remain on the books and how they factor in on enforcement actions, regulatory decisions and permit reviews taking place today,” said Senator Cardin.
“I agree with the EPA that science and the integrity of the scientific process are essential for credible decision-making. I urge Administrator Jackson to continue to seek the very best science available to make good decisions on public policy, particularly in ensuring that all Americans have clean drinking water. It is imperative that the EPA rethink past decisions that drastically narrowed the jurisdictional scope of the Clean Water Act and put important protections at risk.”
