Federal Recovery Funds to help Iowans stay competitive in the workplace, strengthen Iowa’s Unemployment Trust Fund

June 4, 2009 -- DES MOINES – Iowa Governor Chet Culver announced that the US Department of Labor has certified $70.8 Million in federal Recovery Act funds to the state of Iowa. Iowa became eligible for these funds as a result of the Governor’s signature of Senate File 197, the law modernizing Iowa’s unemployment insurance system.

“Today’s announcement is good news for Iowans who are feeling the impact of the national economic challenges,” said Governor Culver. “These funds will directly benefit Iowans who are seeking to improve their skills in the workplace, and to stay competitive in the while on the job. Working with our federal partners, I believe we can, and we will literally work our way out of this recession.”

In addition, these funds will help to stabilize the state Unemployment Trust Fund, to minimize the impact of the national recession on Iowa’s employers.

The $70.8 Million in funding Iowa is certified for is part of a $7 Billion national unemployment insurance modernization initiative, signed into law by President Obama as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
