Senators Snowe, Collins Announce Over $3.7 Million for Transportation Projects in Maine

June 2, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $3,736,695 to Maine for airport projects in the state.

"These Department of Transportation funds will address major infrastructure and safety issues at airports of all sizes in Maine," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "Maintaining runway safety and improving airport services will keep Mainers connected and safe."

The funds are distributed as follows:

§ $130,000 to the Town of Jackman- This grant will support the rehabilitation of an airport beacon and a phase of obstruction removal at Newton Field Airport in Jackman.

§ $150,000 to the Town of Lincoln- These funds will provide for an obstruction study at Lincoln Regional Airport.

§ $650,000 to the City of Portland- This funding will support a construction project for a safety area for Runway 18-36 at Portland International Jetport.

§ $2,806,695 to the City of Portland- This grant will provide funding for phase one runway safety area improvements at Portland International Jetport. This includes mitigation for approximately nine acres of wetland impacts associated with the Runway 18-36 safety area improvements.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to improve safety, increase mobility in support of the nation’s economy, protect human and natural environment, achieve organizational excellence, and support the national security strategy.
