Thirteen Community Groups Will Receive Funding to Hire 1,338 AmeriCorps Workers to Improve Programs for Local Youth

June 2, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide a total of $7,719,922 to 13 community centers in New York City. The funding will hire 1,338 AmeriCorps workers to help New York City students improve their education.

"This funding will bring real results to students in New York City schools," Schumer said. “Additional classroom staffing will provide each student the personal attention they need to succeed in school and in the future. I will do everything I can to ensure that programs likes these are funded so that our schools can provide the best education to their students.”

The numbers in New York City break down as follows:

* Community Health Care Association of NYS/CHCANYS Community HealthCorps will receive $151,093 to hire 12 AmeriCorps members.
* The Grand Street Settlement/Grand Street Settlement Community Builders will receive $260,002 to hire 40 AmeriCorps members.
* The Harlem Children’s Zone will receive $1,357,544 to hire 115 AmeriCorps members.
* The National Association of Community Health Centers, Inc./Community HealthCorps-New York will receive $499,999 to hire 52 AmeriCorps members.
* Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc./Jumpstart New York State (NYS) will receive $411,779 to hire 254 AmeriCorps members.
* Public Allies, Inc./Public Allies New York will receive $251,958 to hire 50 AmeriCorps members.
* The Local Initiatives Support Corporation will receive $1,225,491 to hire 148 AmeriCorps members.
* Teacher’s College at Columbia University will receive $139,500 to hire 93 AmeriCorps members.
* The After-School Corporation/AmeriCorps Teach After 3 will receive $526,674 to hire 137 AmeriCorps members.
* City Year, Inc./City Year New York will receive $2,115,956 to hire 234 AmeriCorps members.
* The Sunset Park Health Council, DBA Lutheran Family Health Centers will receive $350,999 to hire 39 AmeriCorps members.
* Groundwork Inc./Groundwork AmeriCorps Program will receive $151,875 to hire 25 AmeriCorps members.
* Yeshiva Kehilath Yaakov/Community LEAD, “Leadership Education and Development,” will receive $277,052 to hire 42 AmeriCorps members.
