June 2, 2009 -- WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) today applauded the announcement that Michigan will receive a total of $49.9 million in additional Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) from the Department of Labor (DOL) to provide career training for workers who have lost their jobs due to unfair trade. The additional funding brings the total amount of TAA funding allocated to Michigan in Fiscal Year 2009 to over $59.5 million.

“All across the country, the stimulus is providing valuable assistance to the families who are hurting the most as a result of unfair trade policies,” said Stabenow. “This funding will help level the playing field and provide our workers with the resources to build upon their skills and the opportunity to compete in a global marketplace. I will continue fighting to make sure American jobs aren’t being shipped overseas.”

“This TAA funding will provide important assistance to Michigan’s workforce at a very difficult economic time,” said Levin. “I am hopeful that this will help displaced workers in Michigan learn new skills and compete for new opportunities.”

The TAA program was created by President Kennedy in 1962. TAA is funded by the DOL, but administered by state governments and state agencies. While the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act does not provide direct funding for TAA programs, it increases the maximum amount of TAA funds which may be used nationwide from $220 million to $575 million. Based on this expansion, the Department of Labor has initiated a supplemental allocation in the amount of $381,250,000 nationwide. A petition for TAA funds may be filed by a group of three or more workers, their union, or their designated representative.
