06/02/2009 -- WASHINGTON -- United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today welcomed General Motors' announcement that its tentative sale of HUMMER will continue the assembly of the H3 and H3T at the Shreveport plant through at least 2010. As part of the proposed transaction, HUMMER will continue to contract vehicle manufacturing and business services with GM.

"After weeks of speculation and worry, employees of the GM plant in Shreveport can breathe a little easier today," Sen. Landrieu said. "As GM restructures, we welcome the news that the factory in Shreveport will continue making quality products as it has for years. I hope to learn more about this agreement in the coming weeks. It is my hope that this deal will save hundreds of jobs in a community that has been particularly hard hit by the current economic downturn. We have seen far too many northwest Louisiana businesses close their doors in recent months. I look forward to learning more about the prospective buyer and ensuring that the company continues making a stellar product and pays good wages to hard-working Louisiana families."

The Hummer sale is expected to close by the third quarter's end, and save as many as 800 jobs in the Shreveport area.
