June 1, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced a total of $649,792 in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been released to Iowa for medical research. With the passage of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the Economic Recovery Package, Senator Harkin was able to secure more than $10.4 billion for medical research across the United States. NIH funds biomedical research and research training at more than 3,000 institutions in the fifty states and territories.

“Whether studying the impact of the Ebola virus or the links between Alzheimer’s and other illnesses, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa are doing medical research that touches lives,” said Harkin. “With the funding announced today, we also create jobs, which are needed now more than ever, during this economic downturn.”

Details of the Iowa projects are as follows:

$51,710 – IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY – for a study into the biochemical and structural proteins in the Ebola virus.

$179,580 – UNIVERSITY OF IOWA – for a study into the similarity between the tau protein in cancer cell lines and the Alzheimer’s disease.

$224,100 – UNIVERSITY OF IOWA – to investigate immune responses to pulmonary coronavirus infections.

$45,024 – UNIVERSITY OF IOWA – to hire three students and/or teachers as part of the ARRA funds allotted to create research experiences over the next two summers for over 3,700 high school and college students and science teachers at NIH-funded laboratories across the country.

$149,378 – UNIVERSITY OF IOWA – to conduct a study entitled: The Iowa Flood Study: Perinatal Effects of a Natural Disaster. The study will focus on the relationship between major stress during pregnancy (in this case the 2008 Midwest floods) and its impact on maternal and child wellbeing.
