New Jersey Governor Corzine Lauds Giants-Jets-EPA Go Green Agreement
June 01, 2009 -- EAST RUTHERFORD - Describing it as another component of New Jersey’s commitment to sustainable environmental practices, New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine today applauded the partnership agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), New York Giants and New York Jets to use green building practices at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
“I support the Giants and Jets partnership and their commitment to helping clean our environment,” Governor Corzine said. “The New Stadium Project will act as a model for stadiums across the country and I am confident that this construction will help set a precedent for green building in other states while demonstrating New Jersey’s role as a leader in environmentally friendly construction.”
The memorandum of understanding includes strategies to reduce air pollution, conserve water and energy, improve waste management, and reduce the environmental impact of construction. In addition, the goals of the agreement stand to save the equivalent of nearly 1.68 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2007, Governor Corzine signed an executive order to mandate a 20-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and an 80-percent reduction by 2050. Just over a year ago, he signed a bill into law enabling New Jersey to participate in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, the first mandatory cap-and-trade program in the nation for carbon dioxide. In addition, among the many recommendations of the Governor’s Energy Master Plan (EMP) is an aggressive strategy to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent between now and 2020.
“Companies across New Jersey are aiming to renovate their buildings and participate in green construction activity,” added Governor Corzine. “We are indeed pleased the Giants and Jets are joining that team.”
